The first developmental standard discusses student development and diversity. It emphasizes that teachers need to have a clear understanding of student development and diversity that takes place in the classroom. It also states that teachers must be able to provide instruction that is responsive to student differences that promotes development and learning for each student. The second developmental standard involves the learning process. This standard emphasis that teachers must have a broad understanding of the student's learning processes. Teachers must also be able to demonstrate the ability to assist to student achievement. The fifth developmental standard emphasizes the classroom learning environment. It states that teachers must have a broad understanding of students' learning environments. Teachers must also be able to demonstrate the ability to produce a positive, productive, well-managed, and safe environment for each student. Each developmental standard is important to the profession of teaching because it gives teachers the knowledge, skills, and practices they need to help students perform at higher levels.
Based on the developmental standards listed above I do have a few weaknesses. For example, I grew up at a school with a healthy learning environment that had very few problems. There was not a lot of diversity in race, gang activity, shootings, and cultural differences. Jumping into a school with these characteristics could be overwhelming. In order to prevent the anxiety of teaching at schools with these issues I could speak to teachers from schools that deal with diversity and cultural differences. I have met a few teachers that deal with these types of issues and I could visit them in their classroom to see how they deal with these situations.
Another weakness that I have is also based on the environment of my high school. For example, majority of the students at my high school were motivated to excel and perform well in academics. This could be a weakness because I have always been around students that want to perform well academically. Becoming a teacher in an environment with students that are not motivated would make it hard as a teacher to educate. In order to encourage students that academics is important I would have to educate myself on ways to become a motivational teacher. To educate myself I could read books wrote by teachers that have faced these issues. Reading these books could help me understand different ways to motivate the students.
